Mr. Trudeau is present at the G20 summit in Brazil, where President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made poverty the subject of the opening discussion between leaders.

The media was unable to hear Prime Minister Trudeau’s remarks, but his office says he discussed Ottawa’s efforts to not only fund emergency relief, but also address the root causes of the hunger in global food systems.

Mr. Trudeau is scheduled to meet with US President Joe Biden on Monday afternoon, as the Associated Press reported on Sunday that Mr. Biden had authorized Ukraine to use long-range missiles supplied by the United States to strike targets deeper in Russia.

The Prime Minister has already met his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba. He is also due to take part in meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Mr. Trudeau is also scheduled to speak with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, for the first time since taking office.

Last weekend, Trudeau expressed concerns about high levels of Chinese investment in Mexico at a time when the United States is seeking to combat some of Beijing’s trade practices.
