Faced with the prospect of the vengeful billionaire's return to the White House, some former officials, who have opposed him in the past, are considering drastic measures to protect their future.
A former US Army officer, who clashed with top officials during Donald Trump's first presidency, recently considered obtaining Italian citizenship before the November 5 election. Not being eligible, he instead packed a bag containing cash and a list of emergency numbers, in case he had to flee quickly. A member of the first Trump administration, who publicly criticized him, is in the process of applying for foreign citizenship and is hesitating between waiting for the inauguration on January 20 or leaving the country now. While a former senior official, signatory to a controversial letter dating from October 2020 suggesting that emails attributed to a laptop of Hunter Biden, Joe Biden's son, could be part of a “Russian information operation”, seeks to obtain a European passport. The latter, uncertain of the need to flee, asserts: “It’s better to be prepared than caught off guard.”
