Discover the extraordinary wealth of nature in the heart of Montreal? This is what the Espace pour la vie museum complex offers. The Biodôme, the Biosphere, the Insectarium, the Botanical Garden and the Planetarium promise moments that are as entertaining as they are informative for the whole family. And thanks to its attractively priced Passport, you can return as often as you want!
The Insectarium invites you to a multisensory exploration of butterflies and insects which reveal their secrets both in broad daylight and in their underground shelters. The Biosphere, with its thematic exhibitions, allows you to better understand the importance of biodiversity. Some snow-cleared paths in the Botanical Garden welcome visitors who want to stretch their legs in the open air while observing birds in their habitat. On the sky side, the Planetarium offers shows for all tastes under its immersive domes, from the beauty of the cosmos to the most intriguing astrophysical phenomena.
The new exhibition A tightly woven nature
The new permanent exhibition at the Biodôme is definitely worth the detour after the ecosystem tour. With nearly 1,000 stuffed specimens and tactile and sensory experiences, you will discover eight keystone species and their role in the fragile balance of their ecosystem. How does the beaver modify the environment to establish itself there? How Related Are Snowy Owls and Lemmings? Why are coral reefs so essential to biodiversity?
The exhibition can be explored according to each individual’s curiosity in a rich environment that engages all the senses. What does a fox smell like or what sounds does a piranha make? The exhibition A tightly woven nature allows the curious to discover it.
The Biodôme team has carefully selected the most fascinating and educationally relevant specimens from the approximately 5,000 that make up its natural history collection. Wandering albatross, wolverine, stone crab, agami heron, little emerald bird of paradise and giant kingfisher can thus be examined in the smallest details among the other treasures of this brand new exhibition.
“One of the great strengths of this exhibition lies in its highlighting of the Biodôme’s rich natural history collection. The judicious presentation of stuffed animals, preserved in our archives, serves a resolutely current purpose: the safeguarding of biodiversity. Better understanding its interdependencies certainly allows us to better protect it,” explains the director of the Biodôme, Nicolas Gruyer.
The experience Megaceta
The course concludes with the immersive experience Megacetawhich allows you to observe the behavior of the humpback whale thanks to life-size digital projections of rare beauty. In this underwater atmosphere, you will discover a unique point of view on whales, while developing a greater sensitivity towards these cetaceans. These two new experiences enhance the visit to the Biodôme ecosystems to better reconnect with a tightly woven nature, including we are part of and on whom we depend!
