The anger of farmers continues to rumble in Occitania. Less than a year after the general mobilizations of February, the Young Farmers and the FDSEA on one side, and the Rural Coordination on the other, are calling for bring together again this Monday, November 18, 2024. Several local demonstrations should begin before a large gathering by the end of the month.
“The Beginning of the Beginning”
The second act is officially launched. Starting Monday, November 18, several movements will emerge in Occitania. A schedule which follows calls from various unions to mobilize throughout the South-West. The demonstrations will begin locally in certain villages and cantons, before migrating to the metropolises.
“It will start slowly with the tearing down of panels on a local scale for example, but not on a large scale for the moment. Not before the end of the month at least when we will have real blockages in the big cities. It's the beginning of the beginning », Explains Mathieu Maronese, deputy general secretary of Jeunes Agriculteurs 31.
The regroupings have already started two weeks ago with several radars covered in the Pink cityand other banners deployed. “We were the only ones 15 days ago but now we are entering a national movement. What were one-off actions will become punching actions like last time,” continues the farmer.
“We won’t stop”
Each department will organize itself at its own pace over the coming days. However, no date has really been set. This new opus could therefore last longer than the last one if the demands farmers are not taken into account. There Coordination Ruralefor its part, promises to accelerate the pace.
“For the CR it’s more the third part. We moved throughout Occitanie recently and from the 19th we start again almost everywhere until we think we have obtained enough to stop,” announces Lionel Candelon president of the CR du Gers.
Mercosur Treaty, the last straw
If the farmers had indeed left the chapter ajar, the Mercosur only accelerated their return. This free trade treaty between the EU and Latin American countries will be discussed at the next G20which will begin on November 18 in Brazil. Among other things, it provides for the export of numerous food and agricultural products to Europe.
“That's not why we were demonstrating originally, but it only added fuel to the fire,” said Lionel Candelon. A few days ago, the president of the FNSEA, Arnaud Rousseauassured Toulouse News that farmers will “fight” against this treaty.
