Homeless drug users now have access to reserved places in an emergency accommodation center in Geneva. This is the first time that a place of this type has been dedicated to them in the canton.
The Le CausE association inaugurated a new building in the city of Geneva on Tuesday, in partnership with the municipality, the canton and the Première Ligne association, specializing in supporting drug users.
This project is new, because until now, homeless women who used drugs in Geneva could be admitted to the usual emergency accommodation places, but this is the first time that they have had a place dedicated. Until now, only men had places reserved in emergency accommodation.
Adapted support
The center has three places for 24-hour reception. The women will be cared for by social workers over several weeks, but also by a nurse. Their monitoring is also adapted to their very specific profiles, underlines the director of Le CausE, Aude Bumbacher.
“They have often experienced violence linked to consumption or toxic spouses. Some of them have had a fairly difficult journey since their childhood or children who are sometimes placed in a foster home,” she explains in the 12:30 p.m. RTS. “So it’s true that they are oriented here in relation to a problem linked to their addiction, but we work more generally on other aspects linked to their condition”.
These three new places intended for women are financed by the canton of Geneva in its plan to combat crack cocaine. However, consumption will be prohibited inside the building. But unlike other places, drug users will be admitted to the accommodation immediately after using.
