General hospitals in Belgium recorded a cumulative loss of 174 million euros in 2023, according to the 30e edition of the Maha de Belfius report. Hospital federations are sounding the alarm and urging the government to act as quickly as possible.

Lhe turbulent zone that the health care sector is going through remains very active. While the government in current affairs has still not validated a health budget for 2025 (after the veto put by the Open VLD at the General Council of Inami at the end of October), thousands of non-profit workers demonstrated on Thursday to demand more resources and attention for their sector. This Friday, the Maha study (Model for Automatic Hospital Analysis) from the Belfius bank further added to the concern, openly wondering whether “the financing of Belgian hospitals still has the weapons necessary to meet future challenges”.
