Morocco grants nationality to UFC champions Ismail and Islam Naurdiev

Morocco has granted nationality, on an exceptional basis, to brothers Ismail and Islam Naurdiev, recognized fighters of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The two athletes born in Grozny (Russia) benefited from it, by virtue of two royal dahirs entered in the Official Bulletin, dated November 3, 2024. The decision also provides for the lifting of the restrictions provided for in article 17 of the Nationality Code Moroccan.

Now naturalized Moroccans, the two Chechen brothers are therefore exempt from certain limitations, usually valid during the first five years of their new nationality. This includes holding a public office, exercising an elective mandate requiring nationality, or even the right to vote.

According to the provisions of Law 62.06 of 2007, Moroccan nationality can be acquired by “filiation, naturalization, marriage or declaration”. Conditions apply, particularly in terms of residence and integration. As part of the procedure required for this purpose, the applicant must provide proof of parentage (birth certificate), as well as the Moroccan citizenship of the mother or father (birth certificate).

However, naturalization can be granted exceptionally by royal dahir, approved by the Council of Ministers chaired by the sovereign.
