Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone with United States President-elect Donald Trump to discuss their future “cooperation,” the Turkish presidency said Thursday.
Mr. Erdogan “congratulated Mr. Trump on his electoral victory” and “expressed his wish to develop cooperation between Turkey and the United States in the period which opens.”
During his first term, Donald Trump received his Turkish counterpart twice at the White House, in 2017 and 2019.
On the other hand, current President Joe Biden never received Mr. Erdogan in Washington. A reception planned for May had been canceled.
The Turkish head of state is due to participate on Thursday in Budapest in a meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) made up of the Twenty-Seven of the EU, over which Hungary chairs for six months, and their neighbors.
