Rome – Morocco is firmly committed to deepening collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with a view to strengthening scientific capacities in Africa in the field of fusion energy, affirmed, Wednesday in Rome, the Moroccan ambassador to Italy, Youssef Balla.
“The Kingdom of Morocco affirms its commitment to deepening collaboration with the IAEA and international partners in order to strengthen scientific capacities in Africa in the field of fusion and related sciences,” underlined Mr. Balla before the Inaugural Ministerial Meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG), part of the IAEA.
Morocco is also willing to support the activities of the Agency aimed at improving regional cooperation and the exchange of knowledge, particularly in Africa, he added, specifying that this initiative will allow the Continent to become a part integral to the future of fusion energy.
In this regard, the diplomat indicated that the Kingdom is making “notable” progress in education and research in plasma sciences, thus laying the foundations for future exploration of this energy.
For Morocco, continued Mr. Balla, the peaceful use of fusion energy can advance through increased international efforts and with the active collaboration of Member States, in particular through activities organized within the framework of the IAEA on the safety of fusion energy.
As such, the Kingdom calls, through the IAEA Global Fusion Energy Group, for the establishment of qualifying training, particularly for the benefit of developing countries with a view to strengthening scientific foundations and capacities. ultimately enabling the adoption of fusion technologies on a large scale, he said.
Although research dedicated to fusion energy in Africa is still under development, the Continent has expertise in the fields of nuclear and plasma, with professionals qualified in various scientific disciplines, added Mr. .
While welcoming Italy’s initiative to organize this ministerial meeting to “collectively meet the challenge of the advent of a safe, secure and carbon-free energy source”, he highlighted the pioneering role of I IAEA in establishing a global framework for strengthening collaboration between all stakeholders, the objective being to accelerate and support developments in fusion energy, intended to shape the future clean and sustainable energy solutions.
This meeting, chaired by Ms. Giorgia Meloni, President of the Italian Council of Ministers, and Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, is intended to be an opportunity to encourage the efforts of the international community to make commitments within the framework of the Global Fusion Energy Group.
