and Saint-Palais: free consultations at the hospital for tobacco-free month

Patch, electronic cigarettes, lozenges. There are many alternatives to cigarettes, and yet it is sometimes difficult to quit alone. To mark tobacco-free month, the Basque Coast hospital center in is offering free consultations on a stand set up in the hall. A first day was organized this Monday, November 4. Around thirty people stopped, either to take a flyer or to receive advice from the nurses.

On a case-by-case basis

Pascal says it himself, he was “a heavy smoker”. From two packets a day, it went to “a dozen cigarettes“. He reduced well, but without ever managing to stop completely. Three times he relapsed. There, he wants to get there, but by finding out first. Julie Logerais, nurse specializing in addiction at Bayonne hospital, prescribes nicotine patches. “We can try the 21 milligrams. If I underdose you, the risk is that you will not feel the effects, and that you will start smoking again like last time.”

For the nurse, one must not be “chilly“, on the first dosages, to stop gradually. Then, it is possible to reduce little by little, or to supplement with an electronic cigarette for example.. “The danger in cigarettes is the combustion which releases carbon monoxide in particular. With a vape, there is none since there is no combustion, and it fills the need for nicotine“, explains Julie Logerais. In any case, each smoker has their own treatment path. “It’s case by case, everyone has their own story with cigarettes, and their own rhythm”. A stand will be set up on November 21 at the Saint-Palais hospital, and another on November 29 again at the Bayonne hospital.
