Madrid – A severe hailstorm forced Barcelona-El Prat airport to cancel 70 departing flights and divert 18 others, Spanish airport operator Aena said on Monday.
The heavy rainfall also caused flooding in the T-1 terminal and the airport parking lot, where maintenance teams were mobilized to drain the water and restore normalcy to the facilities.
All Catalan airport operations were disrupted by the storm, causing significant delays. For safety reasons, air traffic controllers had to space out flight departures, specifies Aena.
Faced with the situation, a crisis committee was set up within the airport to monitor the evolution and repercussions of the bad weather, it is indicated.
Many passengers impacted by the cancellations gathered in front of airline counters looking for alternatives to continue their journey.
Although the rain stopped by late morning, the effects of the storm were also felt on other infrastructure. The Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, informed that some urban rail services in Catalonia have been canceled due to weather conditions.
The Barcelona region suffered the bad weather less than a week after devastating floods hit the Valencia region, about 300 kilometers to the south, killing 217 people.
