A bitter setback for Algiers: the UN strengthens Morocco’s position on the Sahara, according to Tajeddine El Hosseini

«On Thursday, October 31, 2024, the adoption of resolution 2756 constituted a terrible setback for Algeria when its representative to the UN, Ammar Ben Jamaa, found himself isolated, trying in vain to make two amendments to the text, of which the StatesUnited are the penholder“, affirmed the political scientist in a declaration for Le360. «Algiers’ proposals were surprising, especially when this country, which was refused them, withdrew», noted the professor of international law.

«This is a manipulation of UN practice“, he regretted. As for the two unfounded proposals from Algiers concerning MINURSO, human rights in the Sahara and the refusal of round tables, they were rejected by the Security Council.

The political scientist recalls that the international body had already debated this false point in the past, highlighting the role played by the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) in the southern provinces. On this subject, Tajeddine El Hosseini explains that we have to see what happens “in Tindouf», where rights are violated by Algiers and its Polisario militias.

Regarding the round tables, for the geopolitics expert, “the presentation of two proposals by Algiers proves that this country is a concerned party», insisted the political scientist. “The inappropriate reaction of the Algerian system before the Security Council, observes the political scientistwas illegal and disproportionate“. According to him, this is a headlong escape “to not vote and avoid confrontation».

Obviously, he recalled, the council extended by one year the mandate of MINUSO, whose role is to supervise compliance with the ceasefire. “This resolution comes in the wake of other resolutions, this issue having been marked by the recognition of the United States and of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara».
