In an interview given to L’Observateur this Saturday, November 2, 2024, Youssou Ndour, founder of the Futur Media Group (GFM), addressed the economic challenges facing his group. He expressed his concerns about the financing difficulties encountered by this media platform, founded with the ambition of supporting job creation in Senegal.
“GFM is a platform that we have set up to create jobs. If those who are supposed to buy the ads don’t do so, how do we get out of this? » asks Youssou Ndour. The artist underlines the importance of advertising revenue to ensure the sustainability of GFM, which employs nearly 700 people. Despite its popularity, notably thanks to the TFM channel, the group is struggling to balance its accounts due to a drop in advertising revenue, a phenomenon which affects the entire media sector.

For Youssou Ndour, GFM represents much more than a simple company: it is an initiative created by artists, with a vocation for innovation and creation. “This television was created by artists. It is for this reason that I always urge the program director, Boubacar Ndour, to always innovate, to be copied but never equaled,” he confides, highlighting GFM’s continued efforts to stand out on the Senegalese media scene. .
However, these ambitions come at a significant cost. Between infrastructure investments and salaries, GFM faces high costs. “Contrary to what people think, we don’t make a lot of money,” explains Youssou Ndour.
