Halloween may be behind us, but that doesn’t stop Marievillois Karl Vallée from continuing to hunt ghosts throughout the large community of the Centrale SOS Fantômes du Québec.
His passion for cult films Ghostbusters, or SOS Fantômes, nevertheless appeared late. Around 2013, his son wanted to dress up as a ghost hunter. “I found that all the costumes on the market were mediocre, poorly made,” observes Karl Vallée.
He then obtained a suit, commonly called a female doglike the one worn by each member of the heroic quartet in the film. Although the son’s interest only lasted one Halloween, the father’s interest grew. Over time, he put the suit on his own, adding badges and accessories.
At the heart of Comiccon
Karl Vallée met the founders of Centrale SOS Fantômes Montréal during Comiccon 2013. The colorful festival is aimed at fans of popular culture. During the event, they have the opportunity to meet artists and see a wide range of products from the world of entertainment: science fiction, horror, animation, comics, comic books and video games. The event is ideal for participants to wear the colors of their favorite characters. Mr. Vallée travels there in the company of Slimer, a recognized ghost from the film. “When I have it with me, I often get stopped to take photos. When I don’t have it, it’s quieter,” he confides with a laugh.
The man confirms that some find this passion unusual. “There is a universe for everyone. For me, that’s what excites me at the moment,” says the man who even sports a tattoo in this area.
A great community
The 45-year-old is now a member of Ghostbusters Sorel. “It’s a gang of guys who trippent on Ghostbusters “, he summarizes. The group organizes events, produces podcasts and fanfilms related to the theme. It is one of the entities that join the large community of the Centrale SOS Fantômes du Québec. Communities like this can be found elsewhere in Canada as well as in other countries.
Favorite character
Scholars of the subject know the film’s four main characters as Peter Venkman, Raymond “Ray” Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore. “It’s Ray, my favorite character. He is the heart of Ghostbusters, he is the founder. He is always amazed,” describes Karl Vallée.
He emphasizes having a deep interest in the legendary car of the four musketeers, registered in the name of Ecto-1. “She is the soul in herself of SOS Fantômes », agrees the man, who has lived in Marieville since 2008. He also has various replicas, of different sizes.
Among the multiple accessories deployed on the table, the host presents the “Psychokinetic Energy Meter” (PKE). In the film, the tool makes it possible to identify the presence of spectra. Karl Vallée reassures the newspaper by indicating that he has never detected any suspicious entities with the device.
Cult scene
Fans of the film have reproduced, on their own scale, scenes from the film many times. Mr. Vallée’s favorite scene is the classic sequence where Bibendum Chamallow, the giant marshmallow, attacks New York City. Fought by the quartet, the slimy monster explodes and massively spreads its sticky material throughout the Big Apple.
The Marievillois was seen on his city’s social networks. There he hunted the ghost embedded in the Municipality’s Halloween decor.
