Images showing Marseille police officers being attacked and beaten by several individuals made the rounds on social networks this Wednesday, October 16, 2024, reports Franceinfo. The events took place in the Cité de la Castellane in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône).
“It’s lamentable”
The police were in the process of arresting a suspected dealer in this area known for drug trafficking. “It’s lamentable, it’s really nonsense because if there are no police, we will all end up killing each other”laments one of the residents.
In the images, we see the two police officers on the ground trying to hold a man down from a building in the neighborhood. Around them, several people try to support the arrested man. An individual comes up to the police and delivers a violent kick before fleeing.
Several individuals threw projectiles, stones and glass bottles at the police, causing injuries to the eye for one and the hand for the other, according to Provence.
An open investigation
The Marseille public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into assault and battery on persons holding public authority. Quoted by BFM MarseilleBruno Bartocetti, delegated national secretary of the southern zone of the Police Unit union, indicated this Monday that there were “arrests”.
“But we lack information to be able to identify who carried out the blows. Presumably, they will be taken into custody and they will be severely punished.”he added. Colleagues are “psychologically affected and very affected”. These latter are “still in care and will return to duty very soon.”
