Two years after the implementation of a first “sobriety plan”, the energy crisis seems to be behind us. But the government wants to reduce energy consumption “in the long term”.

The government is launching a campaign on energy sobriety on Monday in order to perpetuate good habits and remind people of “gestures that matter” after two years of decline in energy consumption in against a backdrop of soaring prices. This campaign aims to “remember that every gesture counts” et “to continue the trajectory of reducing our energy consumption”declared Olga Givernet, the Minister Delegate for Energy.

“Over two years in a row, we managed to maintain a 12% reduction in energy consumption” – gas and electricity – “compared to 2019”she added. “We have a goal that must be maintained because the French have made an effort and it is a success. This allowed us to eliminate wasted energy.” The campaign called “Every gesture counts” comes in the form of small clips, based on the comedy of repetition, reminding people of good reflexes in terms of energy consumption. They will be broadcast on radio and television. “The objective is obviously not to feel guilty, but to remember good practices”underlined the minister.

The pursuit of “good habits”

Two years after the establishment of a “energy sobriety plan” aiming to reduce French energy consumption by 10%, the aim is to avoid a rebound in consumption while energy prices have fallen sharply. The objective is also to make this reduction long-term, even if the risk of power outages, as was the case during winter 2022, is largely behind us. This plan was launched in the midst of an energy crisis, marked by the drastic reduction in Russian gas deliveries and the shutdown of numerous nuclear reactors in France due to stress corrosion problems.

“Today, we must be able to get through the winter properly, because our means of production can operate at full capacity”assured Olga Givernet for whom this campaign allows“encourage us to continue good habits that will allow us to move away from fossil fuels and polluting energies”. “And as we have rather emerged from the energy crisis and the vast majority of French people should benefit from a drop in prices, particularly for electricity, we must also maintain these good habits of sobriety so that it is seen really on the bill”she estimated. Round tables and an assessment of the sobriety plan and electricity consumption will be held Monday afternoon at the Ministry of Ecological Transition, after which the campaign will be presented.
