Electronic genius: the inventions of Quebecer Martin Côté go around the world

An electronics genius invents parts that go around the world in his “laboratory”, inside the house he built himself in Stoneham.

You have to be a little careful of the dog when you enter Martin Côté. “Don’t worry, she’s just afraid of strangers, we got her during COVID,” explains the inventor to excuse the worried barking of Maggie, his golden retriever.

“I’ve always been a handyman,” he continues, climbing the stairs to his small workshop upstairs.

It is there, among strange machines, that he designs and produces electronic cards with multiple uses, and many other things.

“They are mostly tools, people do what they want with them,” he summarizes, showing a small gyroscope of his creation. “A man in told me he used it to make a headset that allows his quadriplegic child to control a drone with the movements of his head.”

“It’s rewarding,” he adds, thoughtfully, after pausing.

Inventor’s life

After a 20-year career in IT in the public service, Martin Côté worked for a few years in the private sector. “Then I lost my job during the pandemic. It gave me the little kick to start my own business,” says the entrepreneur.

Since then, he has devoted himself entirely to his business, MHPro.net. “I do full time what I have always done in my spare time,” emphasizes the 53-year-old man.

“When I was 13, I built a remote starter for my moped,” he remembers. I had a rich neighbor who had one on his car, and that gave me the idea of getting one.”

Several years later, he himself built the house he lives in. Of course, he can control the lights and from his phone, and it all runs off a system he built himself.

“I did this 15 years ago, before smart homes were widespread,” he notes, opening the door to a cabinet full of wires.

Some inventions

The father of two boys considers himself lucky to be able to earn a living by devoting himself exclusively to his passion. “As I often say, I don’t want to be rich, I want to be happy. This is where I am,” he philosophizes.

Among his notable inventions for clients is a machine that can control the amount and speed of salt spreading in snow removal trucks, and a card that can control the movements of cameras on RDS sets. “It’s a source of pride, that’s for sure,” the entrepreneur says, backed by a bark of approval from Maggie.

“Really, there is no danger, but it’s better not to get too close,” he warns.
