The proportion of young cigarette smokers has decreased significantly in Switzerland in recent years, according to the latest edition of the “Health and Lifestyle” (ESL) survey, published on October 10 by the OFSP. This study, which focuses on the health behaviors of the Swiss population, shows that in 2023, around 19% of young people aged 15 to 24 smoke cigarettes, or one in five people in this age group.

In 2017, a similar survey established that the proportion of cigarette smokers stood at 30% of 15-24 year olds. “This reduction is remarkable and deserves to be highlighted. The proportion of young smokers has decreased significantly in just a few years, whereas previously it stagnated at a high level, in international comparison,” underlines tobacco specialist Jean-François Etter, honorary professor at the University of Geneva.
