The city of Zurich installs digital electricity meters

The city of Zurich is systematically equipping buildings with intelligent digital electricity meters called ‘Smart Meters’. They transmit consumption data directly and offer more transparency to customers.

By 2029, 300,000 new meters will replace old conventional sensors. This is a new important step in the digitalization of the supply network, the city of Zurich said on Thursday.

Data security is guaranteed because it is encrypted. With these meters, customers can check their electricity consumption directly on the website of the city’s electricity company (EWZ).

The installation of the first digital meters began in August. Manual meter reading will gradually disappear. The city is taking advantage of these changes to also install new gas and water meters. These allow a better assessment of consumption and a more precise location of leaks and damage.
