SpaceX halts all Falcon 9 flights after problem

The American company ordered a pause in its space flights after noticing a problem during the Crew 9 mission, which took place at the end of September. The return of the second stage of a Falcon 9 did not go well.

SpaceX announced on Sunday September 29 a pause in its space activities. The American company reported a problem during the Crew 9 mission, which left the day before, which consisted of sending two astronauts to join the International Space Station (ISS). No more Falcon 9 rocket launches will take place until further notice.

Fall in the wrong place

The incident took place during the second stage’s return to Earth, after the successful launch of the manned capsule. While heading towards the ocean, the stage was confronted with a ” non-nominal deorbit combustion “. Result: he finished his race in the ocean, “ but outside the targeted area », Details the company on X (formerly Twitter).

This did not cause any difficulty for the Crew 9 mission. The crew arrived safely on the night of September 29 to 30, after a long approach phase of the Crew Dragon capsule towards the ISS. The docking went well and the two astronauts (an American, Nick Hague, and a Russian, Alexandre Gorbounov) entered the ISS.

The pause announced by SpaceX has already caused a first “victim”: the company Eutelsat, which was waiting for a Falcon 9 to take off on the evening of September 29, reported the postponement of the OneWebLaunch20 mission – this one aims to constitute a satellite network similar to Starlink, but of a more modest size. The new date is not known.

Falcon 9 isn’t the only rocket currently on pause. The giant Starship launcher is also on hold, for entirely other reasons: it is awaiting a new green light from the American authorities to carry out another test around the Earth. This should arrive around November, a deadline which irritates SpaceX, and which complains about it publicly.
