(Keystone-ATS) With the start of the school holidays in many cantons, a long traffic jam formed on Saturday morning in front of the northern portal of the Gotthard road tunnel. At the peak of the day, around noon, a 10 kilometer line of vehicles was measured.

The travel time was extended by an hour and forty hours, indicated the Touring Club Suisse (TCS) on the X platform, formerly Twitter. The traffic jam gradually reduced during the afternoon, reaching only 2 km at 3:30 p.m., with traffic regaining some fluidity around 5:00 p.m.

In the other direction, the TCS measured up to 5 km, a little less than an hour of waiting, at the start of the afternoon. The line of vehicles also gradually reduced on the Ticino side, but more slowly. At 5:30 p.m., motorists still had to wait almost half an hour at the south gate.

The autumn holidays have started in no less than ten cantons, including Lucerne, Aargau and the two Basels. From next weekend, eight other cantons will also be on vacation. We will therefore once again have to expect traffic jams on either side of the tunnel, which is more than 17 km long.
