(Keystone-ATS) Switzerland’s borders with Italy and will move. The changes with Italy are linked to the melting of glaciers. For France, they concern Geneva for the tram between Perly-Certoux (GE) and Saint-Julien-en-Genevois (F) and rivers.

For the Bout du Lac canton, certain developments, such as the laying of tracks for the new cross-border tram line, involve a rectification of the border in the municipalities of Perly-Certoux and Bardonnex. The two countries will exchange equivalent areas, the Federal Council decided on Friday.

Two other modifications to the route of the Franco-Swiss border are linked to renaturation work on the Hermance and renaturation and damming work on the Foron. Geneva has a common border with France 103 kilometers long, 50 of which are located in the middle of rivers.

Melting glaciers

Concerning Italy, the border line is moving due to the climate. Important sections of the border are determined by the watershed represented by the crest line of glaciers, firn and eternal snow. However, with the melting of glaciers, these natural elements evolve and redefine the national border.

The route is thus modified in the region of Tête Grise / Plateau Rosa, Carrel cabin and Dos de Rollin. A joint Italian-Swiss commission agreed, in May 2023, on a project respecting the interests of both parties.

The modifications are recorded in conventions with Rome and . As these are minor rectifications, the government is authorized to conclude these agreements alone.
