“I’m only going to talk about it very briefly,” warns Christel Geerts immediately, contacted by telephone by our colleagues from HLN. She knows it is not her role to comment on her son’s private life in the media. But after the announcement of Conner Rousseau’s coming out, the 61-year-old woman says she is relieved for him. “All that gossip. All these stories that revolve around my son, I hope they will stop now. The truth is known.”
In the video where he talks about his sexual orientation, Conner Rousseau explains that he revealed his bisexuality only two weeks ago to his mother. “Officially, it’s true, for these two weeks”, reacts Christel Geerts. “But mothers realize this long before. They smell that kind of thing.” She continues: “No subject was taboo in our family, we talked about everything with our children when they were younger. But not too long (laughs). Conner, like other kids, would have found it odd. You don’t have to force things.”
“It’s completely normal for people to ask questions or to be in search. However, I never felt like Conner was looking for a relationship. He always worked a lot and was surrounded by lots of friends: he had no time for a love story. I was just like, ‘Everything in its own time.’ In our family, his sexual orientation is not a problem. We just want him to be happy”
This Thursday, June 15, the president of the Vooruit party, Conner Rousseau, decided to come out as bisexual in a video posted on YouTube. “My sexuality is a complicated subject for me: people like to speculate on it, and I myself struggled with it for three years. Especially when everyone asks me about it,” he confides in the recording. “It’s 2023. It’s not a problem these days, but I still have a lot of difficulties. Not being totally straight doesn’t make life any easier, especially when you don’t know where it’s going to take you, and you want to have kids, like me.”
