New treatments, arrival of artificial intelligence in cancer treatment: are we really making progress against this disease? Hematologist, general director of the Paoli-Calmettes Institute in Marseille, Professor Norbert Vey remains optimistic despite an increasing incidence of new cases.
Not a day goes by without hearing about therapeutic advances. Is this a reality as the number of cancers increases?
Absolutely. Research is dynamic. The figures on the evolution of cure rates are the perfect illustration of this. Thirty years ago, one in three cancers were cured. Today, it’s more than one in two. There are also survival rates. Those who are not cured are allowed to live longer with cancer. This is what we call the “chronicization” of cancers. How ? Thanks to therapeutic progress and a better understanding of the disease which translates very clearly into reality. Still, in terms of innovations, between announcements and the arrival of treatments, there is a gap that can be measured in years. Today, one of our biggest challenges is to speed up the process.
