Each year for 10 years in early February, the World Day for Cancer's Day has been held. On this occasion, members of the Rotary Clubs and associated clubs surrounded by volunteer friends are mobilized to collect donations at the entrance to supermarkets and department stores. These funds are then fully donated to laboratories or medical units to finance research equipment for the fight against cancer.
Since 2015 Rotary has been innovating with the Cancer tokens action!
Disease prevention is one of the 7 strategic axes of Rotary and while cancer is the leading cause of mortality in France with 150,000 deaths each year and 1,000 new cases per day according to WHO, in 2015, it n 'existed no national day of collection for collection for cancer research.
However, the needs of researchers and caregivers were glaring. Consequently, the Rotary and its endowment funds Cancer lands a simple and effective initiative: every first Saturday in February, volunteers gather at the entrance to department stores to collect donations in exchange for symbolic tokens in the colors of the Action and Rotary, made of recycled plastic to preserve the environment, at the rate of one or more euro by donation.
This action takes advantage of the mass effect by exploiting the crowds of Saturday, while highlighting the simplicity of the gesture and the exchange value, in accordance with the principles of Rotary. It is associated with World Day to Combat Cancer of February 4 to maximize its impact at the local level. The endowment fund also collaborates with partners such as France Bleu for a striking local communication, as well as with participating stores that facilitate collection.
The financial results at the national level: since the start of the action in 2015, more than 1,500,000 euros have been collected by the Rotary Clubs of France, Belgium and the Reunion Island, including € 242,919 in 2024.
They made it possible to finance the purchase of an artificial intelligence workstation for the François Baclesse de Caen center (€ 51,319), a Jess System for the Paris Institute in Paris (€ 62,070), a Jess Western Blot System for the Paoli Calmettes Institute in Marseille (€ 63,476) and a Falcon module on Stellaris 8 for the Giga-Chu de Liège (€ 66,054).
The endowment fund
The purpose of this fund is to contribute to the realization of concrete projects relating to major causes of general interest, defended by the Rotary International and relating to research on cancer. To this end, the endowment fund collects, in all transparency, funds before distributing them according to the following criteria: equipment and investments excluding operating costs, intended for care/eradication research, research program under 'approval of the competent national or international authorities. The endowment fund is intended to receive donations and legacies from any natural or legal person, without any condition of belonging to a Rotary Club.
Thus, for ten years, this initiative launched in Rhône-Alpes has spread throughout metropolitan France, as well as at the Ile de la Réunion and in Belgium, thanks to the unfailing involvement of the district delegates ( One representative by district) relaying information, motivating clubs and affecting more and more people.
