The US administration plans to use military planes to transport immigrants deported from the country, said the director of the agency in charge of border and immigration control (ICE), Tom Homan.

Just days after President Donald Trump took office, the US government used military aircraft for the first time to return illegal immigrants to their home countries, Homan noted in an interview with US ABC, adding that this will now happen daily.

According to US officials, the US military transported more than 150 immigrants to Guatemala on two separate flights on Thursday.

Homan stressed, however, that the military flights are only part of a much larger plan.

He said ICE agents can now arrest any of the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country, not just convicted felons or those presenting threats to public safety.

“There will be more arrests across the country,” Homan added.

“The Trump administration arrested 538 illegal criminal migrants” from Wednesday to Thursday evening in the United States, announced presidential spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.

The US president has promised to deport “millions” of illegal immigrants.

The Pentagon, for its part, announced the deployment of 1,500 soldiers to the border with Mexico. These troops will join 2,500 Army Reserve and National Guard troops called up in recent months to support federal law enforcement in the fight against illegal immigration.
