Ten old -fashioned songs for those who have a damaged heart is essentially composed of pieces that Pierre Lapointe wrote by thinking of other performers. The latter are not aware and the goal was not necessarily to offer them, it was rather a game for the Quebec artist.

“In fact, there was one that was presented to someone and who was not retained by that person. It is All your idols“, He reveals.

“Otherwise, I didn’t send anything to anyone. It was really for fun, ”he added without wanting to reveal the identity of the singers he had in mind by writing or of the person who rejected his song.

Is it because of this rejection that he describes his new compositions as old-fashioned? Not at all, assures the singer-songwriter who has a penchant for self-mockery.

Looking at the most listened to the artists in , among others, he notices that he is out of step with the most popular genres of the moment, such as hip-hop and Afrobeat.

“I think I wanted to mark the occasion myself before making myself say that it is an album that seems to come out of Je-Sais-Pas-Quelle-Époque”, jokes Pierre Lapointe.

“And, saying” old -fashionedit’s a bit “timeless” that I mean, ”he says.

Ses Old -fashioned songs are an assumed wink to the great classics of French song, while remaining in an accessible pop.

Accessible for the listener, but not necessarily for the interpreter.

As he wrote by thinking of other performers, great voices which he considers more refined than his, appropriating these songs has proven a challenge for Pierre Lapointe.

“I got caught up in my own game.”

“As The stars guide our souls: It’s very complex to sing! There are singers who can sing it like that, but it’s difficult to sing for me, ”says the artist who writes more often for French people than Quebecers.

In the past, he has notably lent his pen to Calogero, Julien Clerc, Patrick Bruel…

Besides, among his Old -fashioned songs, we find Stop smiling Who appeared on a Bruel album a few years ago. At the time, the Frenchman had asked Pierre Lapointe to write something that he himself wanted to sing.

You have to believe that the Quebecer has succeeded too well his mandate.

When the concept of his new album has taken shape, a collection of his songs written for other voices, he seized the opportunity to offer his version.

L’exception

Like clay pigeons is the exception on this album. This song, he did not write it thinking of another voice, but rather by trying to console himself after the diagnosis of his mother fell: Alzheimer.

Pierre Lapointe says that he was really not going well in the days following the announcement. He then remembered how, in adolescence, he had the impression that he could repair himself by playing the piano.

“The resonance box with the notes that vibrate, it repairs me,” says the artist who started playing without thinking, without looking for a song. And by dint of getting lost on the keyboard, melodies appeared.

Words were more difficult to come. It took him at least six months before they started to appear.

As is the case with the songs that we find on his new album, he realizes that he may be easier to talk about him and what he feels when he thinks of writing for someone ‘other.

“Without realizing it, I was talking about myself and me maybe much more than if I had decided to write songs for me,” notes the one who is currently a teacher at Star Academy.

An appointment for damaged hearts

After a first show in on January 26, Pierre Lapointe will start his Quebec tour on the evening of Valentine’s Day.

This is not the first time that the artist has offered a show on February 14 and he likes to play with the meaning of this day.

“I expect to have a lot of people crying in the concert and it makes me very happy,” says the one who wants to offer a moment of effusion to damaged hearts.

The tone of this new show, which he wants to be simple and impactful, promises to be very different from Winter songs.

“We will surely laugh again, but there the tone is more solemn a little, like the album. […] What people will receive in the face is emotion, emotion, emotion! ”, He insists.

The experience will also be quite different from that proposed on the album which he describes as “very orchestrated”.

For the majority of representations, Pierre Lapointe will only be accompanied by the duo of Pianists Quebec Fortin-Poirier.

“It is once again a nod to what Brel or Ferré did at one time. They arrived with very orchestral albums, but when they were on stage they had almost no musicians with them, except for more sporadic or special events, “he said.

In some large rooms, as at the Grand Théâtre de Québec on April 19, strings will join the trio in front of a decor designed by Geneviève Lizotte from the singer’s drawings.

“Already, I can say that the arrangements are extraordinary and that it explodes the songs,” he announces.
