Closings at Amazon: Quebec confirms nearly 1,500 additional layoffs

The closure of Amazon’s seven distribution centers in Quebec led to 1459 layoffs in different companies that were, among other things, suppliers of the American giant, learned TVA Nouvelles on Thursday evening.

This figure is added to those mentioned in the notice of collective dismissal of the Amazon company revealed on Wednesday. In all, nearly 3,500 employees have lost their work, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Solidarity.

“Reclassification assistance committees will also be able to help these workers. The ministry is confident that the support measures that will be put in place will allow them to find a job, “said email.

The CNKT logistics companies Inc and the TS & s alliance are the most affected, with 171 and 170 employees who were thanked respectively.

Amazon’s announcement has been having a lot of ink since Wednesday. Managers, independent entrepreneurs and employees of delivery centers and sorting centers are assigned by these layoffs.

This news is barely a few months after the unionization of employees of the center of Laval, but Amazon Canada reiterated that the decision has no connection with this fact. It is rather because of “a recent revision of [ses] operations in Quebec ”.

Federal Minister François-Philippe Champagne also asked the director of the company to reconsider his decision during a call, then in a letter published on X.

Amazon Canada said these closures should not harm Quebec consumer service.
