US President Donald Trump promised the world’s top policymakers he would cut taxes if they brought production back to the United States and threatened to impose tariffs if they did not do so in his speech in Davos on Thursday.
Speaking by video from the White House at the annual summit in Switzerland on his third day in office, Donald Trump reviewed the series of executive actions which he signed since his swearing in, affirming that he had a “massive mandate” of the American people to make changes.
He then brandished the carrot and the stick.
“Come make your products in America and we will offer you some of the lowest taxes of any country in the world”he declared.
-“But if you don’t make your products in America, which is your prerogative, then you will simply have to pay tariffs – of different amounts – but tariffs that will inject hundreds of billions of dollars, even trillions of dollars, in our Treasury to strengthen our economy.”
Experts point out that customs duties, which are imposed on incoming goods and services, are mainly covered by the end consumer. Imposing tariffs on goods from Europe and the rest of the world would therefore rather harm national purchasing power and the American economy.
Donald Trump, who spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday, also told those gathered in Davos that the kingdom wanted to invest $600 billion (575.6 billion euros) in the United States. United, but that he would ask the crown prince to increase this amount to 1,000 billion dollars (959 billion euros) – a statement which provoked some laughter from those present in the room.
Davos founder Klaus Schwab has invited Donald Trump to speak in person at the summit next year.
