If we look at the polls in both Quebec and Ottawa, we see that the parties in power are in danger.
Thus, within 18 months, Pierre Poilievre could be Prime Minister of Canada and Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, Prime Minister of Quebec.
Inevitably, even if the two men are not at the same place on the political spectrum, they will have to collaborate, as Pauline Marois did with Stephen Harper.
Missives
Monday, Pierre Poilievre sent a letter to the PQ leader to inform him that a future conservative government would demonstrate responsible federalism.
It’s a new expression. It was the first time that the Conservative leader used this term. Several observers claimed that Pierre Poilievre would not have any sensitivity or platform for Quebec, but obviously, he is not afraid of getting involved at the moment.
For his part, Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon found a partner to dance tango with him. By exchanging letters in this way, François Legault is left on the sidelines, even though he is the Prime Minister of Quebec.
Of course, Mr. Legault has other fish to fry, with the threat of 25% tariffs on Canadian products purchased by Americans.
-However, in a context where the PQ is leading in the polls, the question of the future of Quebec will be at the heart of the next provincial campaign.
So a Poilievre government would help the sovereignist movement. PSPP would undoubtedly like this to be the case, but normally, the Conservatives are more respectful of areas of jurisdiction.
A common enemy
Normally, in Quebec, the big bad wolf is always in Ottawa, it’s easy to hit the federal government. Now all Canadians have a common enemy, Donald Trump, especially if he imposes tariffs.
Thus, Quebecers will have to ask themselves if the Prime Minister of Quebec of a sovereign country could really negotiate with an American president like Donald Trump.
So, PSPP can attack the Conservative leader, but it is possible that Quebecers would prefer to be defended by a Prime Minister like Poilievre than a Premier of a province.
