14 foods with falling prices in supermarkets at the end of 2024 to protect against inflation

On Wednesday December 15, INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) published the latest consumer price index (CPI). If these have overall increased by 1.3% over one year (tobacco prices included) between December 2023 and December 2024, the food sector is doing better with stable prices over the same period. Many products have even seen their prices drop significantly (it must be said that food inflation had risen to around 20% between January 2022, shortly before the war in Ukraine which marked the start of the crisis, and January 2024, and that private labels had taken large market shares).

What are the types of foods which are increasing the most despite the drop in inflation in ?

For some, the price increase has jumped or even exploded: + 28.3% for olive oil, + 10.3% for chocolate, + 6.8% for cocoa and chocolate powder+ 4.2% for mutton and lamb, + 4.9% for fresh fish, + 4.1% for other oils and fats, + 3.5% for fruit and juices. vegetables, + 2.8 for sugar, jam, honey and confectionery, + 2% for butter, + 1.7% for skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, + 1.4% for fruit costs…

What are the food products that go decline in 2025?

Generally speaking, food prices (excluding drinks) have already fallen by 0.2% over one year. This is an average. LThe increases cited above only concern a small part of the foods sold in supermarkets, and the vast majority follow the decline. Frozen foods stand out, like ready meals and even pasta, thanks to the drop in the price of wheat, which reached record heights when we imported it en masse from Ukraine.

Food prices: inflation in the agri-food sector has slowed since April 2024 according to INSEE figures

Since April 2024, if the prices of consumer products increase further, those of food are therefore slowly but surely following the drop in inflation. This despite a legal constraint. The magazine Capital reminds that since the vote of the Decrozaille law of March 30, 2023, promotions on hygiene-beauty and cleaning products must be limited to 34%, but also those on food! As a result, at a time when agri-food manufacturers and supermarkets are going to sit down at the commercial negotiation table, the latter will put a lot of pressure with the aim of offering low prices every month of the year without cutting into their margin.

In the meantime, find in our slideshow below 14 foods whose price has fallen significantly over the past year at the same time as inflation. This list provided by INSEE is not exhaustive.
