Daniel Chapo was sworn in as Mozambique’s new President on Wednesday at a ceremony in Maputo, following months of post-election violence sparked across the country following the opposition’s rejection of the country’s election results. last October.

Mr. Chapo, candidate of the ruling party, the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), took the oath and vowed to dedicate himself to democracy and justice for all citizens, as well as the promotion of unity national.

He was proclaimed President of the Republic by the President of the Constitutional Council, Lucia da Luz Ribeiro.

The Council had previously confirmed the disputed results of the general elections which gave victory to Frelimo, with 65.17% of the votes.

The post-electoral crisis in Mozambique has thrown the country into chaos, after the opposition’s rejection of the results of the general elections of October 9.

More than 270 people died in clashes between demonstrators and the police, according to NGOs. The demonstrations were triggered by the call of opposition leader and presidential candidate last October, Venancio Mondlane.

Mondlane returned to Mozambique last week, after fleeing in the days following the proclamation of the disputed general election results, due to fears for his safety and that of his family.

The main opponent called on his supporters for new demonstrations across the country on Tuesday.
