The Minister of Public Accounts, Amélie de Montchalin, announced on Wednesday January 15 on TF1 a drop in public spending of “more than 30 billion” euros. “We are going to make a historic effort to reduce public spending”she said, then emphasizing the accuracy of press information mentioning 32 billion in savings and 21 billion in revenue increases within the framework of the draft budget.
This is, according to the Minister of Public Accounts, the “greatest effort to reduce spending in 25 years”. His colleague Eric Lombard had recently announced a total budgetary effort of 50 billion euros for the next budget, in the context of slippage in public finances. The government of Michel Barnier, for its part, wanted to find 60 billion (40 billion in savings and 20 billion in revenue) in its budget for 2025.
