Trust in the French media continues to erode. According to the 38th La /Verian/La Poste barometer, 62% of French people believe that it is necessary to “be wary of what the media say on major current affairs issues”. This figure, up five points compared to 2023, illustrates persistent mistrust. The study, published on January 14, coincides with the Médias en Seine festival.

Furthermore, 70% of people surveyed say they favor their loved ones as a source of information, ahead of television news (69%) and the regional press (63%). On the other hand, influencers and social networks arouse the most skepticism, with respective distrust rates of 74% and 64%.

– Weariness with current events

A relative majority (51%) experiences “fatigue or rejection” of the news. This feeling is mainly fueled by the perception of repetitive topics (44%) and by a growing feeling of anxiety or helplessness in the face of information (41%). Despite everything, 76% of French people continue to follow the news with great interest.

– Media coverage considered unequal

In 2024, certain subjects such as the Paris Olympic Games or the war in Ukraine were considered well covered. However, the end-of-life law lacked coverage, according to 52% of respondents. Climate disruption, although considered to be better treated than before, suffers from a lack of emphasis on solutions and related socio-economic aspects.

– Radical opinions and freedom of expression

According to the barometer, 81% of French people perceive an increase in radical opinions in the media, and 77% believe that freedom of expression is increasingly threatened. Attachment to the right to caricature remains significant, but is decreasing among younger people, reflecting the need for a compromise between freedom of expression and respect for individual sensitivities.
