Why Mazda’s new electric top of the range is outdated

It is one of the stars of the 2025 Brussels motor show. The fourth generation of the Mazda 6 is revealed there, with a small “e” in the name in reference to its powertrain which becomes 100% electric instead of heat engines of the outgoing model. In fact, this new Mazda 6e is based on a Chinese platform: that of the Deepal SL03 from the Chang’an group, marketed in the Middle Kingdom since 2022.

Displaying a different design from the latter on the exterior and interior, it nevertheless uses the elements of the powertrain. Called EZ6 in China where it was launched last spring, it will give us the choice between two battery sizes: LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) technology accumulators at the entry level, with a capacity of 68,8 kWha power of 258 horsepower, a autonomy maximum WLTP the 479 km and a maximum charging power of 200 kW direct current. But also high-end NMC technology batteries with a capacity of 80 kWh, a power of 245 horsepower, a maximum WLTP range of 552 km and a maximum direct current charging power of…95 kW ! Yes, we are talking about a maximum charging power lower than that of city cars like the Citroën ë-C3 or the Renault 5 E-Tech. A particularly low figure for an electric road car of this size, which will cost well over €40,000 in this version.

Autonomy doesn’t impress either

The maximum range of this Mazda 6e does not indicate particularly good efficiency either since for comparison, a very slightly larger Volkswagen ID.7 (4.96 meters long compared to 4.92 meters for the Mazda) claims 620 km (WLTP) with 77 kWh accumulators. Not particularly efficient in fast charging, it can still reach 170 kW of direct current charging power (nearly double that of the Mazda 6e with large 80 kWh batteries).

We still have to know the French prices of this new Mazda 6e but we already know that the top of the range with large batteries will not be worth it because of its charging power which will significantly penalize it when traveling when he should behave better there. With a reasonable addition, the small battery variant could, however, be worth it.

For its part, Mazda is preparing its first model designed 100% on a platform dedicated to electric power for the year 2027. By this we mean a model made in Japan with Mazda technology and not a vehicle imported from China with local brand technology.
