This Saturday, Gérard Larcher spoke about the controversy linking him to the purchase of senators’ chairs at exorbitant prices. He tried to put out the fire.
Mea culpa. Embroiled in a controversy after the revelations about two chairs purchased by the Senate for 40,000 euros, Gérard Larcher responded to the accusations among our colleagues from Le Parisien this Saturday, January 11.
He recognized an “error” surrounding the purchase of these famous armchairs. Confessions which did not prevent President LR of the upper house from taking his own defense in order to mitigate his responsibilities. In fact, he denied being aware of the purchase of such furniture and then assured that the advertised price was inaccurate. “Exactly 34,000 euros for two armchairs and a prototype,” the latter explained to our colleagues. He also added that the Senate furniture “has a history and therefore a cost”, to justify the purchase.
Gérard Larcher is now waiting for his institution to change its operation and has announced that an investigation has been opened. “We cannot advocate the reduction of public spending and not apply it to ourselves,” recalled the 75-year-old man who affirmed his desire to see the government of François Bayrou do the same and initiate “ reducing the deficit and public spending with concrete actions.”
Pension reform in the viewfinder
The Chained Duck revealed midweek that the Senate had ordered a “new throne” for its president. A purchase whose bill amounted to 40,000 euros according to our colleagues. An investment justified by “intense use” of the furniture.
The President of the Senate will also be scrutinized in the coming days on a possible negotiation by the new government on pension reform. The latter has already warned the Prime Minister. “The message is clear: neither suspension nor repeal! On Tuesday, the Prime Minister will make the choice. In the Senate, I will not conduct a suspension or repeal procedure,” he declared among our colleagues.
