The funeral of the co-founder of the National Front Jean-Marie Le Pen, who died on Tuesday at the age of 96, took place on Saturday January 11 in the early afternoon in the church of his hometown of La Trinité. sur-Mer (Morbihan), in the privacy of family and a few relatives. The former leader of the French far right must then be buried in the vault where his parents rest, in the cemetery located a few hundred meters from the church.

In the middle of the afternoon, Marine Le Pen and one of her two sisters, Marie-Caroline, followed by several family members, walked the few hundred meters separating the family home from the small Saint -Joseph, in front of a small crowd of curious people and several dozen journalists. In total, around 200 people attended the religious ceremony, which lasted an hour and a half.

While on Tuesday evening, several hundred opponents of the far right gathered in certain cities in , including , and , to celebrate with songs, smoke bombs and fireworks the death of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the prefect of Morbihan, Pascal Bolot, issued an order prohibiting demonstrations in the town on Saturday. The decree stated that “the political personality of the deceased” was “likely to attract, alongside the religious ceremony and the burial, a large crowd composed of both sympathizers but also possibly opponents”.

A second ceremony Thursday in Paris

Numerous police forces were also deployed in the town of around 1,700 people and the port. Around a hundred of them, including a squadron of mobile gendarmes, were mobilized to avoid any overflow, according to Agence France-Presse. Another ceremony, “religious and of homage”this time open to the public, is scheduled for Thursday January 16 at 11 a.m. at the Notre-Dame du Val-de-Grâce church in Paris, attached to the diocese to the French armies.
