In brief:
  • Matthias Jauslin leaves the PLR to join the liberal Green Party.
  • The PVL thus has twelve elected representatives in parliament, the PLR only has 39 left.
  • The PLR regrets the departure of Jauslin, despite the divergence of their positions.

This is bad news which the PLR would have done well without. While the party has already lost its feathers in the 2023 federal elections with one less national advisor and one less senator, now it is losing yet another parliamentarian. Matthias Jauslin (AG) announces joining the liberal Green Party.

In a press release released early this Thursday morning, the PVL is delighted with its membership, which allows it to increase from eleven to twelve the number of elected officials in its parliamentary group under the Dome (eleven national councilors and one senator). “We share the same positions and the same values,” reacts Corina Gredig (ZH), president of the PVL group.

The PLR makes a face

According to the party’s vice-president, Céline Weber (VD), who also had the opportunity to work with Matthias Jauslin professionally, the latter is “an innovative entrepreneur and a very experienced politician, particularly in the field of energy, an area dear to the PVL. With his liberal philosophy and his sense of duty, which also leads him to care about future generations, Matthias Jauslin fits perfectly into the PVL and its values.”

If the PVL is celebrating, the PLR is grimacing. “I take note of this decision,” reacts Damien Cottier (NE), president of the PLR group. It’s a regret, even if it’s not a total surprise. It was clear in recent months that his positions diverged from those of the party on several environmental or energy issues. Personally, I find such changes problematic during the legislature and particularly at the start of it. If we do not feel in tune with a party, we should – out of honesty towards the population – change before embarking on an electoral campaign.”
