The winter weather currently affecting southern Germany has caused significant disruptions to air traffic, particularly at Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe’s largest hubs. A total of 120 flights were canceled on Sunday, representing almost one in nine flights, while many others suffered significant delays.
Snow, ice and sleet significantly slowed airport operations, requiring additional delays for runway snow removal and aircraft de-icing. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight before traveling to the airport and to allow extra time for their travels.
Other German airports are also suffering the consequences of this cold snap. In Munich, only one track remains operational, causing several cancellations and delays. Likewise, Stuttgart faces disruptions due to prolonged defrosting operations.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued ice warnings for much of the country, predicting freezing temperatures and persistent snowfall. In addition to airports, road and rail transport are also affected, with numerous accidents and disruptions reported in several German regions.
