In Mozambique, backed by the commitment of youth to the country’s defense, the 2025 military census is starting against a backdrop of security and political crisis. The government plans to register more than 220,000 young people as the country faces a jihadist insurgency in the north and post-election tensions.
Mozambique launched its 2025 military census this Thursday, January 2, which will continue until February 28 throughout the country as well as in its diplomatic missions abroad. This campaign is carried out under the slogan “ Military census, for youth at the forefront of the defense of national sovereignty and territorial integrity ».
The census targets Mozambican citizens of both sexes, aged 18 to 35, with a goal of enumerating approximately 221,141 young people, including 147,114 men and 74,027 women, according to Colonel Jorge Delfim Leonel, National Director of Human Resources. To facilitate the process, 1,670 census centers were established across the country, divided between 1,499 fixed brigades and 171 mobile ones.
This operation comes as the country faces an insurgency linked to the Islamic State in its northern province, destabilizing the region for several years. On the political level, Mozambique is also going through a period of tension following the disputed results of the presidential election of October 2023, where the victory of Daniel Chapo, Frelimo candidate, was contested by opponent Venancio Mondlane.
The citizens concerned must present themselves with an identity document, a certificate or declaration of level of studies and proof of residence. Colonel Leonel stressed that people who do not appear within the allotted time will have an additional period of 30 days to regularize their situation, under penalty of legal sanctions.
