On the occasion of the 36th São Paulo Biennial 2025, the curatorial team, in collaboration with LE 18 and Dar Bellarj, recently organized the inaugural invocation in Marrakech, entitled “Breaths: On Deep Listening and Active Reception “. The event explored the circularity and precariousness of breath, addressing Gnawa music as a way of being, Sufi cultures, and listening as a practice of coexistence, while highlighting themes linked to creation of places and spaces. Laila Hida, Mourad Belouadi, Ghassan El Hakim, the Gnawa master Maalem Abdellah El Gourd, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Izeddiou Taoufiq, Kenza Sefrioui, Fatima-Zahra Lakrissa, Leila Bencharnia, Maha Elmadi and the Gifted Moms of Dar Bellarj contributed to the event through performative readings, conferences, collective listening sessions and musical performances. To note, the 36th São Paulo Biennale is directed and developed by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, in collaboration with the curatorial team composed of co-curators Alya Sebti, Anna Roberta Goetz and Thiago de Paula Souza, traveling co-curator Keyna Eleison, strategy and communication advisor Henriette Gallus, as well as curatorial assistants André Pitol and Leonardo Matsuhei.
