The departure of Chystia Freeland did nothing to improve the fate of Justin Trudeau, whose party narrowly survived a third motion of censure in the fall. Furthermore, 46% of voters and 59% of Liberal voters now believe that the Prime Minister should step down as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
The Prime Minister’s approval rating, which was already stagnating around thirty percentage points, itself fell to 22%, its worst result.
No less than two in five Canadians (38%) now believe that Justin Trudeau should call a general election as soon as he returns from vacation.
Voting intentions have never been so low for the Liberal Party, according to Angus Reid. Even during the worst electoral performance in the party’s history, under the leadership of Michael Ignatieff in 2011, the Liberals still received 18.9% of the votes, and polls gave them 17% ahead of the election.
