Three victims, two of whom were extricated, were evacuated by firefighters.
We came close to a road tragedy Monday morning, on the RN 21 near the town of Escondeaux (Hautes-Pyrénées) and the Lescurry crossroads. It was around 9:30 a.m. when a Blue Mégane heading towards Rabastens-de-Bigorre collided head-on with a gray Renault Scénic heading towards Tarbes from Rabastens. Under the violence of the impact, the two vehicles found themselves thrown in opposite directions. The accident left three victims: the two seventy-year-old drivers and a passenger in the Scénic.
What happened?
Firefighters extricated the two drivers trapped in the passenger compartment of their car. Around twenty firefighters from the Rabastens-de-Bigorre, Vic-en-Bigorre, Rives Adour and Tarbes emergency centers responded to the accident, including a nurse.
The three victims were evacuated to the Tarbes hospital center, in a state of consciousness. What happened? It is likely that the driver at the wheel of the blue Mégane veered into the opposite lane to hit the vehicle which was traveling in the opposite direction, on this busy road.
“It’s bad luck”
“This is the second accident of the year in almost the same place,” notes the mayor of the town Maxime Solvez who visited the site. “Certainly, it happens too often but this is a moment of inattention and it’s the fault of bad luck, there’s nothing we can do about it.”
Is it possible to make arrangements to avoid accidents on this road? For Maxime Solvez, “the development of a roundabout is not suitable for such a busy road, not to mention that the municipality does not have full powers on a national road to make this type of decision. This is the “State which is the sole master on board We could perhaps think about better signage but I am not sure that this would solve the problem.”
