Trial of the assassination of Samuel Paty: the verdict falls, 13 years of imprisonment for the father of the schoolgirl, 15 years for the Islamist preacher, 16 years for the friends of the killer

After seven weeks of hearings, the Special Assize Court announced this Friday, December 20, its verdict in the trial of eight people, tried since November 4 for their involvement to varying degrees in the assassination of professor Samuel Paty on October 16, 2020, very close to his d'Aulne college, in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine ().

The history and geography professor had been the victim of a barbaric assassination, the perpetrator of which was a young radical Chechen Islamist named Abdoullakh Anzorov. The latter was then shot dead by the police.

All eight defendants were found guilty.

Brahim Chnina, who relayed the lies of his daughter, a schoolgirl, is sentenced to 13 years of criminal imprisonment. Islamist preacher Abdelhakim Sefrioui was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The two men were at the origin of the hate campaign on social networks against Samuel Paty.

The friends of the professor's killer, Naïm Boudaoud and Azim Epsirkhanov, are sentenced to 16 years of criminal imprisonment.

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (Pnat) requested sentences of between 18 months suspended prison sentence and 16 years of criminal imprisonment against the eight accused aged between 22 and 65. Requisitions deemed “too lenient” by the civil parties, the defense having requested the acquittal of most of the accused by contesting their “terrorist intention”.

More information to come.
