(Ottawa) The Trudeau government no longer has the confidence of the House of Commons and can no longer lead the country, says the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre.

The Conservative leader sent a letter to Governor General Mary Simon asking her to recall Parliament immediately to allow a formal confidence vote to take place.

Mr. Poilievre took this step following the announcement of NDP Jagmeet Singh that he will join the Conservative Party and the Bloc Québécois to bring about the fall of the minority Liberal government at the first opportunity. Parliamentary work took place on Tuesday. The House of Commons resumes its work on January 27.

“Mr. Trudeau can no longer govern. We cannot govern without the confidence of the House of Commons. This is why in a few minutes I will send a letter to the Governor General demanding that she recall Parliament to allow a vote of confidence,” said Mr. Poilievre, a few hours after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a thorough reshuffling of his cabinet.

“We need a vote in the House of Commons before the end of the year to allow elections to be held and allow Canadians to regain control of their country,” he added.

Mr. Poilievre intends to send his letter also to the leader of the Bloc Québécois Yves-François Blanchet and the leader of the NDP Jagmeet Singh so that they can sign it.

According to him, the Trudeau government is too weak to face the new administration of President-elect Donald Trump who will take power on January 20. The latter promised to impose customs tariffs of 25% upon his return to the White House.

“The Americans will have a new president if we have a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons in the coming days. We can have a prime minister with a real mandate by the end of January. We need someone who is strong, who can stand up to Mr. Trump, who can take back control of spending, immigration, our borders, crime and protect Canadians,” he said. hammered.

“Let's stop working for politicians and the dramas or soap operas on Parliament Hill, let's work for Canadians but Canada first. »
