The event is now part of the history of Corsica. Sunday December 15, Pope Francis made an apostolic trip to Ajaccio.
Among the members of the Holy Father's delegation: Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, the first Corsican to join the college of cardinals in 2015, after 136 years of insular absence within the ecclesiastical institution.
Questioned as he left the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral in Ajaccio where the sovereign pontiff had just celebrated a mass in front of the Corsican clergy, the cardinal declared: “This is a unique moment in the history of Corsica and I am very happy to be able to share it with you all.”

According to the man of the Church, “it was enough to see the Pope and hear him to understand that he was indeed very happy. You saw how he wanted the children to approach him and with what attention he addressed everyone and in particular the priests and those consecrated to the cathedral.”
A visit which also took on a very personal dimension for the cardinal from Vico. “I thought above all of my parents, who died, and who would have had so much joy to also share this moment. For someone who has devoted his life to the service of the Holy See, being able to come to his hometown with the Pope is something incredible.”
Now cardinal protodeacon, Dominique Mamberti has devoted his career to the service of Vatican diplomacy.
