The Tivaouane departmental trade service seized more than 23 tonnes of peanuts sold below the floor price set at 305 CFA francs per kilogram, during the Pèkèsse weekly market.
This seizure took place after the local gendarmerie informed the trade authorities of the sale of these peanuts at prices between 275 and 300 francs per kilogram. The information was confirmed by an investigation carried out by the competent services, indicated Khadim Ndiaye, head of the regional trade department of Thiès.
During the interministerial council of November 26 devoted to the 2024-2025 agricultural campaign, the government of Senegal established a minimum price of 305 CFA francs for the kilogram of peanuts. Any sale below this price is considered illegal, said Mr. Ndiaye.
Three economic operators in the region were arrested, and the 23,250 tonnes of peanuts seized were sealed. According to the official, these practices are aimed at undermining the state’s efforts for a successful agricultural marketing campaign.
Mr. Ndiaye specified that sanctions will be applied in accordance with the law, and that the procedure is ongoing. The sanctions can be administrative in nature, with an amicable settlement by payment, or judicial if no agreement is reached. In the latter case, the matter will be brought before the competent courts.
Although his service lacks resources, Khadim Ndiaye underlined the effectiveness of the control system put in place, based in part on a network of informants which ensures good coverage of the territory.
