CONAKRY-The Economic Community of West African States will meet tomorrow, Sunday, December 15, 2024 in Abuja, capital of Nigeria. During this 66th summit, West African leaders will look at the political, economic and security situation in the sub-region.
According to our information, the Heads of State and Government of the regional bloc will examine the Reports on the state of the Community, and the Transition process in Guinea. Another point on the agenda is the launch of ECO, the single currency of ECOWAS.
The case of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, three Sahel countries ruled by juntas and which turned their backs on ECOWAS to form a confederation, will certainly also be discussed.
For Guinea, the country is not “invited”, according to a government source. However, certain sectoral ministries are invited to the work taking place on the sidelines of the summit. Although excluded since the coup d’état of September 5, 2021, Guinea preferred to remain within ECOWAS, which it considers as a “family that it helped to found”.
This decision led the institution led by the Nigerian Bola Ahmed Tinubu to change its approach towards Conakry. ECOWAS has polished its language towards the transition regime. Recently, the Conakry authorities have been working with the regional bloc on numerous projects. The regional authority has lifted most of its sanctions against the country led by General Mamadi Doumbouya.
During its previous summit held last July, ECOWAS welcomed the relative progress made in the process of returning to constitutional order. However, she urged the Transitional Authorities to prioritize the facilitation of an inclusive inter-Guinean dialogue involving all political actors in order to ensure a consensual and peaceful transition process.
