The Syrian rebels, led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Cham (HTS) and its allies, succeeded in overthrowing the regime of Bashar Al-Assad following a lightning offensive which lasted only eleven days. This development of the situation in Syria has provoked numerous reactions, including that of Abdelilah Benkirane, secretary general of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), who expressed palpable satisfaction with this liberation of the Syrian people.
Indeed, Benkirane did not fail to express his satisfaction with this monumental event. For him, the defeat of the “tyrant” Al-Assad, who has reigned for five decades under the yoke of an autocratic family dynasty, is above all a victory for the Syrian people in search of freedom and dignity.
In a speech broadcast on the party’s official YouTube channel, he highlighted painful memories for the Syrian people that must never be forgotten. Benkirane also recalled his own commitment to denouncing these acts of cruelty, having been one of the few to do so while serving as head of government.
He indicated in this sense: “ I stand resolutely alongside the Syrian people, and do you remember when barrel bombs were dropped on Syrian homes? As a former head of government, I was the only politician in Morocco to denounce this atrocity. Unfortunately, my commitment sparked criticism from the State, relayed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time, Salaheddine Mezouar. I did not respond to these criticisms, because my solidarity lies with the oppressed peoples”.
The secretary general of the PJD did not hesitate to establish a parallel between the evolution of Syria and the events that occurred during the “Arab Spring”. He indicated that the party, alongside the Sovereign, worked to maintain Morocco’s stability while other neighboring countries were sailing into the unknown. According to him, even nations that have managed to preserve their stability have faced major challenges, as exemplified by the Al-Assad regime, which has maintained an authoritarian hold on its people at a tragic cost.
Remember that the Syrian rebel forces announced on Sunday the fall of Al Assad’s power in Syria. “ The tyrant Bashar al Assad has been overthrown. All prisoners were released from Damascus prison. We hope that all fighters and citizens will preserve the Syrian state “, they said in a statement on public television. In addition, the leader of the Syrian opposition forces, Abu Mohammad Al-Joulani, affirmed that public institutions will remain under the supervision of the former Prime Minister until the transition phase.
