Another fatal accident on Highway 50

Highway 50 was once again the scene of a very serious road accident on Wednesday morning in the Laurentians. One man died, while another suffered serious injuries.

Fine snow covered the ground when the violent accident occurred, around 10 a.m., near kilometer 249, in the Brownsburg-Chatham sector.

According to the authorities, for a reason still unknown, the driver of a van veered out of his lane and ended up in the opposite direction.

The 65-year-old man allegedly hit the car heading in the opposite direction head-on.

A third driver, who was trying to avoid the accident, collided with the van.

The driver who deviated from his path was transported to hospital in a condition considered very critical. His death was unfortunately pronounced shortly after by a doctor.

The other driver involved in the head-on collision suffered serious injuries. He is an elderly man in his thirties.

Finally, the third motorist escaped unhurt.

A portion of Highway 50 was completely closed to traffic to allow collision investigation specialists from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) to establish the cause and circumstances of the accident.

“Snow could be one of the contributing factors. We will also have to see if the van was equipped with winter tires and whether or not the driver adapted his driving to the road conditions,” indicated Sergeant Marc Tessier, spokesperson for the SQ.

Motorists traveling in the area had to use a detour via Route 148 for the duration of the police investigation.

This tragedy is in addition to the numerous road tragedies to have occurred on Highway 50 between the Laurentians and the Outaouais in recent years.
